Double Boosts Baylor

Kevin Sevigny hit a three-run double in the fourth inning to lead Baylor into the College World Series with a 6-1 victory over Clemson at Waco, Texas.

Baylor (44-22) advanced for the third time and the first since 1978.

Sevigny’s bases-loaded double to left center gave the Bears a 4-1 lead.

Cory VanAllen (8-4) got the victory, giving up seven hits and only one run over six innings. Ryan LaMotta pitched three innings of shutout relief and picked up his seventh save. Clemson’s run came in the second inning on Kris Harvey’s 25th homer.

Tulane 9, Rice 6 -- Micah Owings drove in the decisive run in the top of the ninth at New Orleans, and Tulane advanced to the College World Series for the second time.

Rice starter Eddie Degerman shut down Tulane (55-10) for most of the game and the Owls led, 3-2, heading into the eighth. The Green Wave then scored seven runs in the last two innings, with Owings’ liner to left breaking a 6-6 tie.

Tulane reliever Daniel Latham (2-0), who had given up three runs in the eighth as Rice (45-19) tied the score, 6-6, retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.

Tulane’s other World Series appearance was in 2001.

Texas 6, Mississippi 4 -- Will Crouch’s sixth-inning home run put Texas ahead to stay at Oxford, Miss., and the Longhorns advanced to their fourth College World Series in a row. It will be their record 32nd appearance in Omaha, and Texas has won five titles, the last in 2002.

Crouch led off the sixth with his sixth homer to break a 3-3 tie. Mississippi (48-20) brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two out in the ninth, but J. Brent Cox struck out Stephen Head.

Texas (51-16) is the only team returning from last year’s World Series.
