Solis Seems Ready for His Close-Up in Cinema

Share

Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who will return from Japan in the next few days, was the last rider to win the Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap two years in a row.

Desormeaux won with Inesperado for trainer Bobby Frankel in 2002 and returned to win the 1 1/8 -mile grass race for 3-year-olds a year later on Just Wonder for trainer Laura de Seroux.

Alex Solis will try to match Desormeaux’s double when he rides probable favorite Osidy in the 59th running of the Cinema today at Hollywood Park.

Successful on 5-2 second choice Greek Sun in 2004, Solis has been aboard Osidy, a son of Storm Cat, in each of his two U.S. races. Owned by B. Wayne Hughes and trained by Richard Mandella, Osidy was a troubled second in the Harry Henson on April 22, then stretched out to a mile and won the Will Rogers by a head on May 28.

His main challengers will be Willow O Wisp, the runner-up in the Will Rogers, and Legal Precedent, who is two for two on the Hollywood Park turf.

Race of the day: Dance With Ravens, Three In The Bag, King Of Jazz and Wild Desert head a field of 10 3-year-olds scheduled to go 1 1/4 miles in the $1-million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine in Toronto. The Queen’s Plate is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, which continues with the Prince Of Wales Stakes on July 17 at Fort Erie and the Breeders’ Stakes on Aug. 7 at Woodbine. Patrick Valenzuela will ride Wild Desert, who has won two of 11.

One for the road: Bogart’s Cat gets a confident boost in class after a win May 30 and should get plenty of pace to chase in today’s sixth at Belmont Park. Jorge Chavez will ride the 3-year-old Catienus colt, who rallied from last to win against $35,000 claimers nearly a month ago, for Blue Stork Stables and trainer Roy Sedlacek in the $60,000 claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Fly Forrest Fly and Smarmy Charm in the first, Travel Alarm, Dig For It and Love That Song in the second, Lineout and Republican Hawk in the third and Rapid Romanza, Red Menace and Carbonator in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/115. Money: Previous day/meet total: $18/$591.10. Total money bet: $826.
