From Times Wire Reports

A lightning-sparked brush fire had grown to 167,000 acres as it continued to burn southwest of the mountain communities of Pine and Strawberry. Fire crews were setting back fires along the flanks, trying to prevent flames from moving closer to homes.

The fire was 12 miles from the point where evacuations might be necessary, officials said.

Lightning ignited two fires on June 21 near Cave Creek that within days had merged into one blaze and forced the evacuations of about 250 homes northeast of Phoenix. Eleven homes and three storage sheds were destroyed in that area before the fire moved on.
