Landry to Have Surgery

Purdue’s Carl Landry, the second-leading scorer in the Big Ten Conference, will sit out the rest of the season after tearing a knee ligament in Saturday’s game against Minnesota.

Coach Gene Keady said Monday that Landry, a 6-foot-7 forward, would need surgery.

Landry was averaging 18.2 points and was sixth in the conference at 7.1 rebounds a game.

A chronic back problem has forced Cincinnati junior point guard Chadd Moore to give up basketball.

Moore has been bothered by a bad back during his three seasons at Cincinnati. Coach Bob Huggins said Moore would keep his basketball scholarship even though he has left the team.

The Bobcats are down to one point guard, Jihad Muhammad.

Former Iowa star Pierre Pierce pleaded not guilty to charges that he assaulted his former girlfriend and ransacked her home at West Des Moines, Iowa, in January.

If convicted on all charges, Pierce could be sentenced to up to 56 years in prison and fined $9,000.

Pierce was dismissed from the team Feb. 2, two days after police named him a suspect. He was the team’s leading scorer at the time.

Coach Karl Hobbs received a three-year contract extension from George Washington, a reward for putting the Colonials in position for a shot at their first NCAA tournament berth since 1999.

Hobbs’ contract previously went through 2008. He has a 60-51 record in four seasons, including 36-18 over the last two.

The Colonials are 18-6 and can clinch a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season West Division title with a victory over St. Joseph’s tonight.

This season, the Colonials were ranked in the top 25 for six weeks, their first poll appearance since 1998.

Virginia Military Institute reassigned Coach Bart Bellairs, two days after the Keydets (9-19) finished with a losing record for the ninth time in his 11 seasons.

Bellairs, who has a record of 116-191, has five years left on his contract.
