From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Advocates of splitting Santa Barbara County in two have criticized the findings of the commission that was charged with detailing the financial viability of a new county.

Proponents of splitting the county say the commission’s work is faulty and question the study’s results because the panel used information provided by county department heads.

The report, which took 11 months to prepare, said the proposed Mission County could not pay for the level of services that Santa Barbara County provides and would have a $30-million annual deficit.

Voters will decide on the division in June 2006.
