Trent Reznor continued his dramatic comeback Wednesday as his first album in six years, “With Teeth,” entered the national sales chart at No. 1 after selling 272,000 copies in its first week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Reznor, who records and tours under the band name Nine Inch Nails, was one of the great rock voices of the ‘90s, but his future was in question recently.

His last album, 1999’s “The Fragile,” was a frequently compelling look at emotional helplessness, but the collection was so intense that pop audiences found it hard to absorb and radio airplay was nil. Around the same time, Reznor privately battled alcohol and drug addiction.

But the 39-year-old rock auteur, who says he has been sober for four years, has returned to action with a new single, the grinding “The Hand That Feeds,” that is a smash on rock radio and a triumphant performance May 1 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Reznor’s success continues the revolving door at the top of the album chart. Since 50 Cent’s six-week hold on the No. 1 position ended April 20, albums by Mariah Carey, Rob Thomas and Bruce Springsteen have spent one week each in the top spot.

Retailers expect the Dave Matthews Band to take over the No. 1 spot next week.

Two other albums debuted in the Top 10: the soundtrack to the latest “Star Wars” film (No. 6 with sales of 96,000) and Fall Out Boy’s “From Under the Cork” (No. 9, sales of 68,000).
