Concert would help Third World
An all-star concert slated for London near the 20th anniversary of 1985’s Live Aid fundraiser is being planned, this one designed not to raise money for starving Africans but to persuade Western nations to forgive Third World debt.
No acts have been confirmed, but British press reports zero in on U2, Coldplay and Live Aid co-founder Midge Ure as likely participants in what is being billed as Live 8.
Paul McCartney’s name also has been raised, but a spokesman for the ex-Beatle said Thursday that there is no confirmation from his camp on whether he’ll participate.
According to the website for Prince’s Trust, a British charity, that group will postpone its annual large-scale concert in Hyde Park in July so that Live 8 will be able to use the site. The event is being timed to coincide with the G8 summit, which brings together leaders of the major industrial democracies to discuss world issues. The G8 is being held in Scotland this year.
