“Mad Hot Ballroom” -- A Weekend Forecast item in Thursday’s Calendar Weekend section referred to the movie “Mad Hot Ballroom” as a hit at the Sundance Film Festival. In fact, it premiered at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival.

One of the unabashed hits of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the documentary “Mad Hot Ballroom” follows the entry of a diverse group of New York City schoolkids into the sophisticated world of merengue, tango, rumba, foxtrot and swing. The 11-year-olds from public schools in Washington Heights, Tribeca and Bensonhurst are profiled by director Marilyn Agrelo and writer Amy Sewell as they commit to something that challenges the concept of what is cool in an age of contradictions.

“Mad Hot Ballroom,” PG for some thematic elements, opens Friday at the ArcLight Cinemas, 6360 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 464-4226; Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex, 1332 2nd St., Santa Monica, (310) 394-9741; and Landmark’s Westside Pavilion Cinemas, Westside Pavilion, 10800 W. Pico Blvd., (310) 281-8223.

Energetic rhythms

Grammy-winning jazz pianist-composer Michel Camilo will perform four shows this weekend in Costa Mesa. The Dominican-born artist has been praised for his wildly energetic multi-rhythms and great technique, with McCoy Tyner and Ahmad Jamal influences shining throughout. His latest CD, “Solo,” featuring tunes by George Gershwin, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Thelonious Monk, plus some original material, was released in January.
