Storm Wolf Looking for Clear Sailing in Barrera

Share

Storm Wolf, who has won his last two starts by a combined 14 1/2 lengths, will try a graded stakes for the first time against five other 3-year-olds in the $150,000 Lazaro Barrera Memorial today at Hollywood Park.

Trained by Bruce Headley and owned by a partnership that includes Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable LLC and Marsha Naify, Storm Wolf was a troubled fourth in his career debut on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita.

Brought back nearly three months later, the son of Stormin Fever beat maidens by seven lengths as the 3-2 favorite, then was even more dominant in his first against winners, scoring by 7 1/2 lengths as the 9-10 choice.

Stretching out to seven furlongs in the Barrera after two victories at six furlongs, Storm Wolf will break from the inside post and will be ridden by Alex Solis.

His most accomplished opponent is High Standards, who has won four of five for owner-breeder John Harris and trainer Marty Jones and has yet to lose in four starts on dirt. Garrett Gomez will ride the gelded son of High Brite, who broke his maiden against $50,000 foes on Nov. 25 in Inglewood.

Race of the day: Daydreaming and Saintliness, who finished 1-2 in the Next Move Handicap on March 25 at Aqueduct, will meet again in the $200,000 Shuvee Handicap at Belmont Park. A Grade II at one mile, the Shuvee also attracted Bohemian Lady, who has won four of 10 for trainer Todd Pletcher, Traci Girl and Society Selection, a multiple Grade I winner who hasn’t raced since finishing last in the Shirley Jones Handicap on Feb. 19 at Gulfstream Park.

One for the road: King Hoss had a troubled trip when third in his finale at Gulfstream Park on April 15 and can make amends with a clear journey in the ninth at Belmont. Mike Luzzi will ride the 3-year-old El Prado colt for owner Frank Stronach and trainer John Kimmel in the $44,000 maiden race at 1 1/8 miles on the grass.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Apalachee Tiger and Cherono in the sixth, Soldier’s Kiss and Del Mar Miss in the seventh, Storm Wolf in the eighth and Storming Pride, Skip’s Gal, Tuff Muffin, Bend and Lereyev in the ninth.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 2/51. Money: Previous day/meet total: $10.80/$274. Total money bet: $346.
