Jake Peavy wasn’t pitching for himself, he was pitching for his team. They both won.

Peavy pitched a two-hitter for his first career shutout, and the San Diego Padres handed Brandon Webb his first loss of the season in a 10-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Phoenix.

“It’s very satisfying,” said Peavy (5-0), a power pitcher who acknowledged ignoring strikeouts to concentrate on finishing. “I’m just glad we could rest that bullpen.”

Dave Roberts matched career highs with four hits and four runs batted in, and Brian Giles and Ryan Klesko homered off Webb (6-1), helping take the suspense out of the matchup between top young pitchers.

Webb gave up a season-high six runs -- three earned -- capped by Klesko’s two-out, two-run shot in the seventh inning.

New York 12, Florida 4 -- Kris Benson won his third start in a row, Jose Reyes hit two triples, and the Mets broke out of their slump at Miami.

The Mets were shut out in the last two games of their series in Atlanta and hadn’t scored in 19 innings.

They roughed up two pitchers who were called up Wednesday and finished with 14 hits, including six for extra bases.

Frank Castillo took the loss in his first major league start since Sept. 16, 2002, when he pitched for Boston.

Pittsburgh 8, Cincinnati 4 -- Oliver Perez continued his success against the Reds and got plenty of support from a balanced offense at Cincinnati.

Perez (3-4) is 5-0 in seven starts against the Reds dating to last season.

Colorado 5, Chicago 2 -- Jason Jennings pitched seven strong innings, and Preston Wilson and Todd Greene hit solo homers at Chicago as the Rockies ended a three-game losing streak.
