La Jolla Will Play Host to Davis Cup

The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club will be the site of the first-round Davis Cup match between the United States and Romania, Feb. 10-12, according to U.S. Tennis Assn. President Franklin Johnson.

Johnson told The Times on Monday that the surface will be hard court and that temporary stands will be built, bringing the show-court capacity to 4,000-plus spectators. Scottsdale, Ariz., also apparently made a bid for the U.S.-Romania matches.

This will be the second year in a row that a Southern California venue was selected to play host to a first-round Davis Cup match. In March, Croatia upset the United States, 3-2, at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Among the likely players for the U.S. are Andy Roddick and U.S. Open doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan of Camarillo.
