Louisiana State Upsets No. 13 West Virginia in Overtime

Darel Mitchell scored a game-high 26 points, including the final three-point baskets in regulation and overtime, to give Louisiana State a 71-68 victory over No. 13-ranked West Virginia on Saturday at Morgantown, W.Va.

“I kind of knew when I let it go that it was going to hit,” Mitchell said. “A guy got his hand up, but it didn’t affect me.”

The winning shot was Mitchell’s fifth three-pointer of the game. The Tigers (3-0) made six.

With five seniors -- four starting -- the Mountaineers (2-3) were expected to build upon their first trip to the final eight of NCAA tournament since 1959.

Instead, West Virginia lost its third consecutive nonconference game for the first time in 25 years.

West Virginia retired Jerry West’s No. 44 during the game. West, the former Laker great, led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA finals.

No. 2 Texas 90, Louisiana Monroe 55 -- P.J. Tucker made his nine shots, including his first career three-pointer, and finished with 19 points to help lift the host Longhorns (5-0).

Cecil Hood led the Indians (3-3) with 15 points.

No. 5 Oklahoma 81, Belmont 59 -- Terrell Everett scored 17 points and keyed a 14-0 run for the host Sooners (3-0) after the Bruins (2-1) had cut the deficit to 47-35 early in the second half.

No. 10 Boston College 76, Oklahoma State 68 -- Jared Dudley scored 24 points and the Eagles (5-0) overcame a 13-point deficit to win the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational.

David Monds had 15 points for the Cowboys (4-1).

No. 15 Illinois 77, Rutgers 55 -- James Augustine scored 18 points to help the Illini (5-0) win the South Padre Island (Texas) Invitational.

Quincy Douby led Rutgers (3-1) with 21 points.

No. 18 Iowa 79, Texas San Antonio 46 -- Adam Haluska scored 15 points and Greg Brunner had 14 to lead the Hawkeyes (4-1), who got off to a slow start against the Roadrunners (2-1) before using a late first-half rally to begin pulling away at Iowa City.

No. 20 Indiana 102, Western Illinois 79 -- Marco Killingsworth scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half, leading the Hoosiers (3-0) in their first road game this season. Western Illinois dropped to 1-2.

No. 21 George Washington 80, Norfolk State 69 -- J.R. Pinnock scored 19 points to counter Tony Murphy’s 25 points for Norfolk State (0-4) and help the Colonials (2-0) win at Washington.

No. 22 Nevada 68, Nevada Las Vegas 61 -- Marcelus Kemp scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half at Las Vegas and the Wolf Pack (3-0) held on after the Rebels (2-1) cut the deficit to 57-56 with 5:22 to play.

The Rebels shot only 39% from the field.
