Chris Rodgers matched his season high with 20 points, scoring 15 in the second half as No. 9 Arizona ran away from Virginia for an 81-51 victory Sunday night at Tucson, Ariz.

Hassan Adams and Mustafa Shakur scored 14 points each. Adams, who also had nine rebounds, had 12 points during a 29-1 run that began late in the first half and blew open a tight game.

The Wildcats (2-2) went into their home opener on a two-game skid, losing to Connecticut and Michigan State in the Maui Invitational after an opening win over Kansas.

Sean Singletary had a season-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough to help the Cavaliers (2-1) win their first three for a sixth consecutive year.

J.R. Reynolds, Virginia’s top scorer, went three for 14 and missed one of two free throws -- part of the reason Arizona reversed the outcome on the Cavaliers, who hadn’t given up more than 44 points in a game coming in.

No. 4 Villanova 84, Lehigh 47 -- Allan Ray set Villanova’s individual three-point record with eight and scored 26 points, and the Wildcats (2-0) also set a team mark with 17 three-pointers at Villanova, Pa.

Villanova took more three-point shots (33) than regular field goals (26).

Jose Olivero scored 15 points for Lehigh (2-4).

No. 12 Michigan State 84, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne 73 -- Paul Davis had 30 points and 14 rebounds, and Maurice Ager added 20 points at East Lansing, Mich., for the sluggish Spartans (3-2), who returned home after playing the equivalent of 4 1/2 games in five days in Hawaii.

Justin Hawkins led the Mastodons (1-3) with 13 points.

No. 23 Maryland 88, Nicholls State 56 -- Chris McCray scored 20 points and the Terrapins opened the second half with a 16-0 run at College Park, Md.

Two days after returning from Hawaii, where they played three games in less than 48 hours at the Maui Invitational, the Terrapins (4-1) endured a sluggish first half before pulling away.

Ekene Ibekwe scored nine points and James Gist had two baskets in the 16-point run that gave Maryland a 55-30 lead.

Nik Caner-Medley scored 16 points, Ibekwe finished with 15, and D.J. Strawberry had 12 points and 12 assists in the Terrapins’ 23rd straight nonconference home win. Stefan Blaszczynski led Nicholls State (1-4) with 20 points.

Temple 73, Miami 56 -- Mardy Collins scored 19 points and had seven assists, and Dustin Salisbery added 16 points for the Owls in a win over Miami (4-2) at Philadelphia.

With Temple (2-1) stretching its lead to 16 points in the final minutes, an object was thrown on the court, temporarily halting play and angering Coach John Chaney. He grabbed the microphone and told the crowd it wasn’t Temple’s way to be seen as “idiots.”

“Stupid is forever,” Chaney told the crowd. “You can’t change stupidity.”

Long Beach State 108, San Francisco State 51 -- Jibril Hodges led six players posting double figures for the 49ers at Long Beach.

Hodges finished with 17 points. Aaron Nixon added 15 for the 49ers (1-2), who were 11 for 18 from the three-point line.

Lawrence Metz led the Gators (0-2) with 12 points. San Francisco State shot 30%, compared to Long Beach State’s 61%.

The 49ers cruised to a 59-28 halftime lead. An alley-oop dunk from Nixon to Shawn Hawkins made it 80-40 with 10 minutes left.
