Keeneland Meet Opens

Keeneland begins its 17-day fall meet today with two graded stakes, topped by the $400,000 Alcibiades for 2-year-old fillies.

A field of 11 is scheduled to go 1 1/16 miles in the Grade II and trainer Bernie Flint will be trying for his second consecutive victory in the Alcibiades. Flint, who won with Runway Model a year ago, will send out More Than Pretty, a daughter of More Than Ready who has one win in six starts. Rafael Bejarano will ride.

Also on the program is the $150,000 Sycamore Breeders’ Cup, a Grade III at 1 1/2 miles on turf. Rochester, winner in 2001 and 2002, is back for another shot as a 9-year-old.

Race of the day: Dream’s, unbeaten in three U.S. starts, will make her first appearance on the Santa Anita turf course today in the $65,000 Swingtime at one mile on turf. Alex Solis will ride the 4-year-old, Chilean-bred filly against a field that includes Candy Factory, who has won all four of her races on grass at Del Mar and Santa Anita.

One for the road: Sexy Helmsman looks like the controlling speed from the favorable outside post in tonight’s seventh at Bay Meadows.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Pareek, Year Of Light and Daily Forecast in the second; Bedugul and Hallowed Dream in the third, and Mashiko in the fourth.
