Jaguars Deliver Loss to Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals might want to hold off making any Super Bowl plans.

Byron Leftwich threw two touchdown passes, Fred Taylor ran for a season-high 132 yards and the Jacksonville Jaguars handed the Bengals their first loss of the season, 23-20, Sunday night at Jacksonville, Fla.

Cincinnati started 4-0 for the first time since 1988 -- the franchise’s last Super Bowl season -- and began the game as one of the last two undefeated teams in the league.

But the Jaguars took advantage of good field position early and had two big stops late that left AFC South rival Indianapolis as the lone unbeaten team.

Josh Scobee kicked three field goals, including a 51-yarder in the second period and a 53-yarder with 9:45 to play that gave the Jaguars (3-2) a 10-point lead.

Jacksonville’s defense held on from there -- barely.

The unit made two huge stops that kept Carson Palmer from engineering a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback.

Bobby McCray knocked the ball out of Palmer’s hand at the Jacksonville 45-yard line with 1:28 to play. Akin Ayodele, who dropped a possible interception the play before, recovered it.

Buffalo 20, Miami 14 -- Nate Clements stripped Dolphin running back Ronnie Brown of the ball and the Bills recovered the fumble with 1:37 left to secure the victory at Orchard Park. N.Y.

Buffalo nearly squandered a 17-0 lead before forcing Miami’s fifth turnover with the Dolphins threatening at the Bills’ 30-yard line.

The Bills ended a three-game losing streak and gave Kelly Holcomb a win, the veteran backup quarterback getting his first start of the season in place of J.P. Losman.

Holcomb completed 11 of his first 15 attempts and engineered scoring drives on Buffalo’s first three possessions.

Holcomb finished 20 for 26 for 169 yards and a touchdown, helping revive an offense that sputtered under Losman, the first-year starter who replaced Drew Bledsoe in February. Buffalo’s 20 points were the most since a season-opening 22-7 win over Houston.

Tennessee 34, Houston 20 -- Quarterback Steve McNair threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Titans at Houston.

The performance gave him more than 25,000 yards passing. He is the second player in franchise history and the 49th player to reach the mark. Warren Moon became the first when the team was still in Houston.

The win was the 100th of Titan Coach Jeff Fisher’s career.

In the third quarter, Jarrett Payton, son of the late Walter Payton and in only his second game after being elevated from the practice squad, bulled in from five yards for the first touchdown of his career.
