The Supreme Court rejected a request Tuesday by former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr. to review his corruption conviction, probably exhausting the appeals process for the city’s longtime leader.

Cianci, 64, is serving a five-year, four-month sentence for racketeering conspiracy.

His conviction followed an FBI probe into corruption at City Hall, where prosecutors had cast him as the head of an administration plagued by corruption.

His lawyers asked the Supreme Court to review his conviction after the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston rejected an appeal last year.

The lawyers disputed a judge’s decision to exclude from the trial a tape on which Cianci tells an undercover federal agent that if anyone asked him for a bribe, he would see to it that that person was arrested.

The Supreme Court gave no explanation for declining to review the case.

U.S. Atty. Robert Clark Corrente called the decision the final chapter in the case and a validation of the prosecution of Cianci.

Cianci’s lawyer, Terry MacFadyen, agreed the case was over.
