USC senior linebacker Dallas Sartz, a team captain who has missed three games because of a shoulder injury, almost certainly will redshirt this season, his father said Tuesday night.

Jeff Sartz said he spoke with Coach Pete Carroll on Tuesday before practice and met with a team doctor and linebacker coach Rocky Seto afterward to discuss Dallas’ condition.

“It’s 99% he’ll take the medical redshirt,” Jeff Sartz said in a phone interview. “The doctor told him he’d only be at 80% for the rest of the season and that there was a 90% chance the shoulder would pop out again.”

Jeff Sartz said his son probably would have arthroscopic surgery in the next week or two and would return for the 2006 season.

“Dallas really wants to play, but I think he realizes this is the best way to go,” Jeff Sartz said.

Running back Reggie Bush returned to practice but participated only in individual drills because of a right knee bruise.

Bush injured his knee on USC’s first possession in last week’s 42-21 victory over Arizona. Bush, who rushed for 110 yards, said his knee “was killing me the whole game, but I wasn’t going to sit out until the game was far enough out of reach.”

Bush did not practice Monday because of a study session for a test.

“I’m still a little sore,” he said.

Carroll said Bush would ease back into a full regimen before Saturday’s game at Notre Dame, much as he did a few weeks ago when a 30-touch performance at Oregon left him sore.

“We’ve got to get him back, get him right,” Carroll said.

Matt Leinart said he worked with a personal quarterback coach Monday morning to correct minor mechanical problems in his throwing motion.

Leinart met with Steve Clarkson, who has tutored Leinart since high school, for about 45 minutes.

“Just some mechanics stuff, nothing big,” said Leinart, who has passed for 1,646 yards and 12 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Clarkson also tutored assistant head coach Steve Sarkisian in college.

Safety Kevin Ellison was scheduled to have knee surgery Tuesday. Carroll said cornerback Terrell Thomas also was scheduled for knee surgery.
