Ramser Field Has Many Contenders

Share

The $100,000 Harold C. Ramser Sr. Handicap, which will be run for the 19th time today at Santa Anita, may be an ungraded race, but it is an interesting betting affair.

There are numerous contenders in the one-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies. Ten were entered, and it is difficult to throw out any of the scheduled participants.

She’s A Jewel, the upset winner of the $77,000 Aladdin Resort Handicap on Aug. 21 at Del Mar, will try for her third win in four starts on the turf under a new rider. Alex Solis will take over on the daughter of Successful Appeal for owner Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable LLC and trainer Jay Robbins.

In the Aladdin, She’s A Jewel won by a neck over Conveyor’s Angel at 19-1; Brooke’s Halo, who is also in the Ramser field, was a half-length back in third.

Island Escape, Homecoming, Louvain, A Classic Life, Shining Energy, Thatswhatimean, Lasika, Somethinaboutlaura and Silver Stage are also entered.

Shining Energy, a Rahy filly trained by Julio Canani for Terry Lanni and Bernie Schiappa, will be looking for her third win in five starts on the Santa Anita turf course.

Race of the day: Behaving Badly, unbeaten in three starts, will try for her second Grade III victory in a row when she takes on 10 other fillies and mares in the $300,000 Thoroughbred Club Of America at Keeneland. Jerry Bailey will ride the 4-year-old daughter of Pioneering for trainer Bob Baffert in the six-furlong race. In her last start, Behaving Badly won the Rancho Bernardo on Aug. 19 at Del Mar.

One for the road: Barbecue Bob is the speed of the speed as he stretches out for trainer Bill Morey in today’s fifth on the closing-day card at Bay Meadows. Bobby Gonzalez will ride the 4-year-old Slew City Slew gelding in the $6,250 claimer at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Kayleighbelle, Zain Lass and Sunrise Summer in the fourth, the Cherryonthebottom entry in the fifth and Cusco, Ugotadowhatugotado, The Toast Of Troy and Ahuriri Hikawai in the sixth.
