A movie about child abuse was selected Friday as Italy’s Academy Award candidate for best foreign language film after the academy rejected the country’s original entry, a film association announced.

Anica association said “La Bestia nel Cuore” (The Beast in the Heart) was selected by the Italian film academy. The movie stars Giovanna Mezzogiorno and was directed by Cristina Comencini, who wrote the 2004 book upon which it is based.

Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rejected Italy’s first choice to enter, Saverio Costanzo’s “Private,” because the movie was not in Italian, as academy rules require. English, Hebrew and Arabic are spoken in the film, according to the Internet Movie Database.
