Concert to honor Chet Helms

Share

Rock musicians and bands whose heyday was the ‘60s rock scene in San Francisco will gather Sunday for a free concert in Golden Gate Park to commemorate the life of Bay Area promoter Chet Helms, the man often described as “the father of the Summer of Love” who died June 25 of complications from a stroke.

The lineup includes members of Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship, Sly and the Family Stone, Canned Heat, Country Joe & the Fish, Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, Eric Burdon & War and Hot Tuna.

Helms promoted shows in the Bay Area for nearly 40 years and is credited with bringing Janis Joplin to the city from her native Texas and hooking her up with San Francisco’s Big Brother & the Holding Co.
