Heatley Has Four Goals for Senators

Dany Heatley took advantage of the new NHL and had a lot of fun at Toronto’s expense.

Heatley scored four consecutive goals to lead the Ottawa Senators to an 8-0 victory over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Toronto.

“I’m a fan of the rules,” Heatley said smiling. “It’s been an exciting month in the NHL.”

He netted his first on a rebound when Ed Belfour failed to catch a puck after initially making a glove save. Heatley made it 4-0 at 1 minute 16 seconds of the second period after the defense failed to check him in front of the net.

The next goal came after he fell down but still scored on a one-timer from the circle at 4:19 of the second period.

Heatley recorded his career-high fourth goal on a breakaway at 5:33 of the third period. He is the first NHL player with four goals in a game since Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin did it against Detroit on Feb. 24, 2004.

“Dany was Dany tonight. He was flying. He had the one-timer going,” Ottawa’s Jason Spezza said. “I was just a spectator tonight.”

Acquired from Atlanta in a trade, Heatley had two career hat tricks, his last coming against the New York Rangers on Jan. 23, 2003. He has eight goals in nine games with the Senators.

Dominik Hasek made 27 saves for his 65th shutout and is one behind Patrick Roy for 13th on the all-time list.

Edmonton 5, Nashville 1 -- Ales Hemsky had a power-play goal and three assists, and Jussi Markkanen made 23 saves for the Oilers, who handed the host Predators their first regulation loss.

Nashville started the season 8-0 before falling in overtime at Columbus on Wednesday night.

Detroit 4, Chicago 2 -- Robert Lang scored a goal in the third period at Chicago and Chris Osgood had 23 saves for the Red Wings (11-1), who are off to their best start in franchise history.

Buffalo 6, New York Islanders 4 -- Third-period power-play goals by Daniel Briere, Tim Connolly and Ales Kotalik lifted the Sabres at Uniondale, N.Y., where Martin Biron made his season debut and stopped 33 shots.

Tampa Bay 3, Atlanta 2 -- Fredrik Modin scored two goals, including the winner when the puck deflected off defenseman Niclas Havelid with 12:57 to play, and the Lightning rallied to win at Atlanta.

New York Rangers 5, Montreal 2 -- Dominic Moore scored twice at Montreal, Jaromir Jagr scored his NHL-leading 11th goal and the Rangers scored three goals on their first 10 shots against Jose Theodore, who left after the first period.

New Jersey 5, Boston 4 -- Viktor Kozlov had two goals in regulation and scored in the shootout, and Scott Clemmensen stopped 27 shots for the Devils at Boston.

Carolina 5, Pittsburgh 3 -- Rod Brind’Amour, Eric Staal and Glen Wesley scored in a 4 1/2 -minute span of the third period at Pittsburgh, rallying the Hurricanes to their fifth consecutive victory.

Minnesota 3, Columbus 1 -- Todd White scored twice at St. Paul, Minn., and the Wild ended a three-game winless streak, thanks partly to a defense that held the Blue Jackets to 16 shots on goal and killed eight of nine power plays.

Dallas 5, Phoenix 3 -- The Stars trailed, 3-1, in the second period, but Mike Modano scored in the second period and Sergi Zubov, Niko Kapanen and Jere Lehtinen scored in the third at Glendale, Ariz.

Colorado 4, Vancouver 3 -- Center Ian Laperriere picked up a loose puck after a scrum along the boards and scored on a breakaway at 1:55 of overtime at Denver.

San Jose 3, Calgary 2 -- Brad Stuart tied the score, 2-2, with 22.4 seconds left in regulation and Nils Ekman scored the shootout clincher at San Jose.

Washington at Florida -- The aftermath of Hurricane Wilma forced the postponement of the game. No new date was announced.
