Elvis Is Providing the Hits

Some people call Louisville “the ‘Ville.”

The player putting the ‘Vil -- and the thrill -- in Louisville these days is defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

He set an NCAA record Saturday with his ninth sack in two games, breaking the mark set by Georgia Tech’s Pat Swilling in 1995.

After making six sacks in the Cardinals’ opening game against Kentucky -- a single-game NCAA record -- Dumervil added three more in No. 11 Louisville’s 63-27 victory over Oregon State.

Dumervil battered poorly protected Beaver quarterback Matt Moore, as the former UCLA starter passed for 317 yards but was sacked repeatedly and committed two fumbles on hits by Dumervil.

Only 6 feet and 256 pounds, Dumervil brings to mind the Indianapolis Colts’ Dwight Freeney, a two-time Pro Bowl defensive end at 6-1 and 268 pounds. Dumervil says he has studied film of Freeney.

It’s not Dumervil’s squatty body, but his name, that draws the most attention.

His mother named him in honor of Presley, and as Dumervil left the field Saturday, Louisville fans shouted, “Elvis! Elvis!”

A certain tune might soon be ringing in more quarterbacks’ ears:

“All Shook Up.”
