Wilcox Finds Seattle a Better Fit

Chris Wilcox reminisced with friends Friday night before the Seattle SuperSonics and Clippers played at KeyArena.

The SuperSonics and Clippers met for the first time since a Feb. 14 deal brought Wilcox -- the Clippers’ first-round selection in 2002 -- to Seattle and sent long-range specialist Vladimir Radmanovic to Los Angeles.

Wilcox, sidelined Friday night because of a sprained right foot, never met expectations in three-plus seasons with the Clippers, but has thrived as the SuperSonics’ primary low-post option.

In his first 26 games for Seattle, including 20 starts, the forward-center averaged 14.7 points and eight rebounds while shooting 60.2% from the field and 79.8% from the free-throw line.

He had 26 points and 24 rebounds April 4 in a 104-87 victory over the Houston Rockets. Wilcox displayed potential with the Clippers, but Coach Mike Dunleavy often appeared frustrated because of Wilcox’s performance.

“It’s been good here, being in this type of program,” Wilcox said. “It’s a fresh start, the chemistry is there and this [fastbreak basketball] is my type of game, so I’m having a lot of fun with it.

“And the big difference here is consistency. Almost every night here it’s the same thing. I know exactly what I have to do and what they expect of me. It just makes me more comfortable. It’s better than not knowing and just being thrown into the fire.”

Wilcox’s skills are better suited to the SuperSonics’ style, Dunleavy said.

“If you’re playing an up-and-down game, it’s going to be really positive for him,” Dunleavy said. “This is perfect for Chris, and we got a guy who brought something we didn’t have.”
