Chase, Suicide Follow Shooting
A gunman led police on a 15-minute chase early Wednesday, ending at the Huntington Beach Pier, where he fatally shot himself.
The chase came after he allegedly wounded another man in Newport Beach whom neighbors described as his estranged wife’s boyfriend.
Authorities released neither man’s name, saying it was because of the continuing investigation.
The wounded man, hit several times with a shotgun in the abdomen and chest, was in stable condition at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
“He was bleeding profusely,” said neighbor Tim McQuillin, who lives near the shooting scene, which was atop a parking garage.
The shooting occurred about 10 a.m. after Newport Beach police responded to reports of gunfire at the Coronado Apartments, on 16th Street near Irvine Avenue. The suspect bolted in his Jeep Liberty when officers arrived, leading a 60-mph chase for 15 minutes, police said.
The suspect, after making a U-turn on Pacific Coast Highway near a spike strip officers had set up, pulled over next to the Huntington Beach Pier and shot himself, police said.
McQuillin said the wounded man told him about a love triangle that led to the shooting, information that police would not confirm.
