Spanish Kitchen

What would surf and turf look like if it went Mexican? Check out this restaurant row tequila den’s langosta al carbon y filete relleno: half a Maine lobster, grilled in the shell and served over garlic spinach and a grilled filet stuffed with a zingy poblano pesto. You also get a serving of mashed potatoes enriched with cream cheese and laced with jalapeno.

* Langosta y filete, $38. 826 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A., (310) 659-4794.

Vibrato

Chef Chris Ennis does a tartare duo at this sharp jazz supper club, owned by Herb Alpert. There’s a tuna tartare made with crushed toasted pistachios, creamy avocado and currants in a spunky Asian vinaigrette, and a beef tartare with cornichon, fried capers (for a bit of crunch) and shallots. They are served with crisp won tons, a natural with the tuna, and brioche toast points, a perfect mate for the beef.

* Tartare duo, $19. 2930 Beverly Glen Circle, Bel-Air, (310) 474-9400.

Boa

At this trendy beach-adjacent steakhouse from the guys behind Sushi Roku and Katana -- definitely not your granddad’s steakhouse -- you can design your own surf-and-turf combo. Choose from any of the steaks, perhaps the bone-in Kansas City fillet or the signature 40-day dry-aged New York strip, and then add garlicky sauteed prawns, steamed crab legs or grilled lobster.

* Surf and turf starts at $62. 101 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 899-4466.

Palomino

This popular restaurant offers two surf-and-turf variations. There’s a grilled New York steak paired with salmon that is brined in a mixture of sugar, salt, pepper and herbs and cooked in the smoker; or a grilled fillet paired with tiger prawns slathered in garlic butter and roasted in the brick oven.

* Steak and salmon, $40.95; steak and prawns, $41.95. 10877 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, (310) 208-1960.

Gladstone’s Malibu

When you want some whitewater with your meal, it doesn’t get better than this classic, which offers three versions of surf and turf. The most over the top has got to be “the Gladstone,” an 8-ounce filet with a whole lobster -- a smallish one, yes, at 1 1/2 pounds -- but still, an impressive spread.

* The Gladstone: market price. 17300 Pacific Coast Highway, (310) 573-0212.
