Animal advocates put up a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who shot a protected great blue heron with a pellet gun.

Surgery on the male bird’s wounded wing failed to improve his condition and he was euthanized Monday at the International Bird Rescue Research Center in Cordelia.

The bird, which is protected under federal law, was found April 15 in Fairfield.
