Update -- The Avengers have lost five games in a row and are on the verge of failing to reach the playoffs for the first time under Coach Ed Hodgkiss, who is in his fifth season with the franchise. Rookie Sonny Cumbie has started the last nine games at quarterback and has thrown for 2,534 yards, with 48 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Avengers have 20 takeaways on defense this season, compared with a league-leading 37 last season. The Avengers’ Lonnie Ford is fifth in the AFL in rushing with 125 yards and eight touchdowns in 31 carries. San Jose leads the series, 8-5, but lost to the Avengers, 75-61, on March 12.
