Denver Broncos defensive lineman Gerard Warren will be out two to four weeks after dislocating a toe on his left foot during a goal-line drill Saturday.

Warren fell to the ground, screamed in pain and clutched his foot after participating in the drill. He was carted off the field, although the news on the injury wasn’t as bad as it first appeared it could be.

It was a scary moment for Denver defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. “We’re blessed,” Coyer said.

The injury occurred when rookie running back Mike Bell tried to find an opening from the two-yard line. It appeared Warren may have been stepped on or someone had fallen on him.

If Warren would have broken the toe, he would have been out for the season. Denver signed the former Cleveland Browns star to a six-year, $36-million deal in the off-season.

Safety Donte Whitner, the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, signed with the Buffalo Bills after skipping the first eight days of training camp.

The former Ohio State standout had been the top drafted player still unsigned and only one of three first-round selections not under contract.

Without disclosing financial terms, Whitner said the two sides compromised on guaranteed money. Whitney was seeking $14 million, and the Bills had offered $12.9 million as of Wednesday.

Whitner wanted to be paid closer to the $15 million guaranteed as part of a five-year deal safety Michael Huff -- the No. 7 pick -- signed with Oakland last month because the two play the same position. The No. 9 pick, linebacker Ernie Sims, received $12.1 million guaranteed as part of a five-year contract with Detroit.

An MRI showed no damage to Terrell Owens’ left hamstring, but the Dallas receiver isn’t ready to get back on the practice field. He skipped his third consecutive day of work, this time sitting out an intrasquad scrimmage.

He rode a stationary bicycle so slow that fans razzed him to pick up the pace, and got off to do some exercises with trainers. Afterward, he stayed late to work with a rookie receiver, as he has done throughout his layoff.

Minnesota Vikings strong safety Tank Williams was carted off the field after injuring his left knee. He injured the knee while backpedaling during a seven-on-seven passing drill. He did not make contact with another player, but as soon as he planted his left leg, he screamed and fell to the ground.

San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson returned to practice a day after sitting out because of a sore neck, and it might be the only time in August he carries the football at Qualcomm Stadium. Tomlinson almost always skips exhibition games, so odds are fans won’t see him when the Chargers play host to Green Bay next Saturday and Seattle on Aug. 26.
