Three-Race Streaks on Line

Share

A pair of 3-year-olds riding three-race win streaks will get together in the $150,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Breeders’ Cup today at Saratoga.

The Grade II at 1 1/8 miles on turf is the main event on a card that follows the induction of Cougar II, trainer Carl Hanford and jockey Bill Boland into racing’s hall of fame. The race is also part of a pick six with a carry-over of $96,214.

After Market, a son of Storm Cat out of the multiple-stakes-winning mare Tranquility Lake, is unbeaten in his three starts, and all of his wins have been on turf.

He became a graded-stakes winner when he took the Lexington, a Grade III by 1 1/2 lengths on July 9 at Belmont Park. Cornelio Velasquez will ride After Market for owners-breeders Pam and Marty Wygod and trainer Bill Mott.

Brilliant, a son of former Breeders’ Cup Mile winner War Chant, is the other streaker. A winner only once in his first five starts for owner-breeder Mill House and trainer Neil Howard, Brilliassant got hot when he switched to the grass, not surprising given his pedigree. All three of his consecutive wins came on the Churchill Downs, including a half-length score in the Jefferson Cup, a Grade II, on June 17. Robby Albarado will ride the dark bay.

The other contenders in the Hall of Fame are Galantas, Manchu Prince and Green Lemon, who is coming off a 14-length win in an allowance race at Woodbine on July 14.

Race of the day: Miss L’Augeval, who won her last start by a neck against $50,000 claimers on July 13 at Hollywood Park, will make her first start for trainer Doug O’Neill in the seventh race today at Del Mar. David Cohen will be aboard the 4-year-old Zilzal filly for owners STD Racing Stable and former USC basketball coach Henry Bibby in the $63,000 allowance at one mile on turf.

One for the road: Five Star Design showed good speed in his debut before settling for second behind eventual repeater Native Ruler) and can wire his foes in the fifth race today at Colonial Downs. Luis Garcia will ride the 2-year-old son of Five Star Day for a partnership and trainer Tim Salzman in the $24,000 maiden contest at five furlongs on turf.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Sugar Doll and Stormin Mon in the fifth; all in the sixth; Sweet Way and Big Promise in the seventh; and Specific Rule in the eighth.
