at Kansas City 5, Boston 4: Mike Sweeney hit a run-scoring single with two out in the ninth inning, capping a two-run rally against rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon. Manny Ramirez homered to extend his career-best hitting streak to 24 games. Sweeney, a five-time All-Star, came off the 60-day disabled list Tuesday after sitting out 88 games because of a bulging disk in his back.

New York 7, at Chicago 6: Randy Johnson pitched six innings of no-hit ball, and the Yankees hit three homers against Jon Garland to end his eight-game winning streak. With the Yankees leading, 7-0, Tadahito Iguchi broke up the 42-year-old Johnson’s bid for a third no-hitter when he singled to left leading off the bottom of the seventh. After a walk to Jim Thome, Paul Konerko doubled in a run. Jermaine Dye followed with another run-scoring double, ending Johnson’s night.

Texas 14, at Oakland 0: Mark DeRosa hit three-run homers in consecutive innings, and the Rangers hit five homers overall. Carlos Lee scored four runs and was four for five with his first home run for Texas, and Rod Barajas and Gary Matthews Jr. also hit solo homers to stop the Athletics’ six-game winning streak.

at Toronto 4, Baltimore 3: Roy Halladay tied for the major league lead with his 14th win. B.J. Ryan got five outs in a row for his 26th save in 30 chances.

at Seattle 2, Tampa Bay 0: Jarrod Washburn didn’t give up a hit until Ben Zobrist’s bunt single leading off the sixth inning, and Adrian Beltre homered to lead the Mariners to a three-game sweep. After walking Carl Crawford with one out in the first, Washburn (6-11) retired 14 batters in a row -- including nine on fly balls. The single by Zobrist, the No. 8 batter in Tampa Bay’s order, went one-third of the way up the third-base line. Beltre charged the ball but couldn’t pick it up.
