PRESTON MATTINGLY, SS

Gulf Coast, Rookie League

Mattingly is the son of former New York Yankee Don Mattingly and was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft. At 6 feet 3, 195 pounds, he has excellent speed but is still raw at the fundamentals. As his father said on draft day: “I don’t think anybody thought he’d be the 31st pick after only about 120 high school games.” Preston Mattingly is batting .290 with 12 doubles, one home run and 29 runs batted in in 47 games with the Gulf Coast Dodgers.

CLAYTON KERSHAW, LHP

Gulf Coast, Rookie League

Kershaw was considered the top high school pitcher in the 2006 draft and was selected by the Dodgers in the first round. He has a 92-mph fastball and a hard curveball, and in his final year in high school he finished 9-0 with a 0.45 earned-run average, 109 strikeouts and 22 walks in 46 innings. With the Gulf Coast Dodgers, Kershaw is 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA, 54 strikeouts and five walks in 37 innings. Dodgers scouts compare him to former Yankees left-hander Dave Righetti.
