Two children were killed and six others were injured Tuesday in an explosion in the frontyard of a home, authorities said.

Police did not immediately release information about what caused the explosion about 5 p.m. in the city’s Oleander neighborhood, but neighbors told the Bakersfield Californian newspaper that some children had found shotgun shells and placed them in a barbecue pit.

The victims, four boys and four girls, ranged in age from 7 to 12, Bakersfield Police Det. Greg Terry said.

No one had been arrested, he said.

A Bakersfield bomb squad was on the scene and investigating late Tuesday.
