Salonen, in pain, sits out in Paris

Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Esa-Pekka Salonen withdrew from conducting two concerts this week in Paris because of back pain, according to Los Angeles Philharmonic spokesman Adam Crane.

Salonen, who was to have led the Orchestre de Paris on Wednesday and Thursday at the Salle Pleyel in the French capital, expects to resume conducting duties “very soon,” Crane said. Salonen’s next scheduled conducting date is Dec. 9 with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. Thirty-year-old Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov filled in for Salonen in Paris.
