Bakersfield puts away Pepperdine

Richard Andrews scored 21 points and Carl Damus had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State Bakersfield to an 82-76 upset of Pepperdine at Malibu on Thursday night.

Andrews, who made six of eight free throws, closed out the game with a one-handed dunk with seven seconds left.

Kingsley Costain had 19 points for the Waves (2-9), off to their worst start since the 1996-97 season when they lost 10 of their first 12 games.

Bakersfield (3-5), which is in its final season playing at the Division II level before moving to Division I next season, outrebounded Pepperdine, 44-29.

The Roadrunners were down six points midway through the second half, but they fought back with an 11-3 run and moved ahead, 66-64, with 6:26 left and never trailed again.

Cal State Northridge 73, Master’s 66 -- Calvin Chitwood scored 26 points and Jonathan Heard had 23 to lead the Matadors (6-4) over the visiting Mustangs (4-5), an NAIA school.

Chitwood and Heard scored the last 12 points for the Matadors over the final 5 minutes 14 seconds to ensure victory.

Lucien Pesoli, a transfer from Louisiana Lafayette, scored a season-high 22 points for the Master’s.

WOMEN

Nadia Parker scored a career-high 19 points and Shay Murphy recorded her fifth double-double of the season to lead USC (5-4) to a 78-53 win over visiting Prairie View A&M; (2-5). The Trojans took a 42-18 halftime lead. Murphy finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
