Nominee for state Hall of Infamy
Re “A flawed Hall of Fame,” Opinion, Dec. 14
Brava to Patt Morrison for her criticisms of the nearsighted picks for the state Hall of Fame. And double brava for her suggestion of a California Hall of Infamy.
My first selection would be former state Supreme Court Chief Justice David S. Terry.
In the course of a long career, Terry was imprisoned by the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance for stabbing an official of the committee during a street brawl, killed a junior U.S. senator in a duel, left the state to fight for the South during the Civil War and, after his return, was himself shot to death by the bodyguard of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Field, as Terry was assaulting Field in a railway cafe near Stockton. Terry established a record of political violence that others have never been able to match, much less surpass.
