Street to Be Named After Longtime Drag Queen

Supervisors voted Tuesday to name a street after longtime drag queen Jose Sarria, one of the first openly gay men in America to run for public office.
One block of 16th Street will now be renamed Jose Sarria Place in honor of the 82-year-old Sarria, who waged an unsuccessful run for city supervisor in 1961. A handful of neighbors had signed a petition against the name change.
