Florida Overcomes Injuries in Victory

Florida’s best long-range scorer was sidelined, and its star swingman wasn’t himself. Seemed like the perfect time for Taurean Green to take control.

Green scored 17 points and Al Horford had 14 to lead the eighth-ranked Gators to a 69-58 win over Mississippi at Oxford, Miss., on Tuesday night in Florida’s first game without Lee Humphrey, the team’s leading three-point shooter and defender.

Florida, 19-2 overall and 5-2 in the Southeastern Conference, led by as many as 15 points, shot nearly 54% and ended a two-game road losing streak in its first game since Humphrey’s left shoulder was separated in a bicycling accident and he was lost for at least one week.

The Gators also didn’t have a healthy Corey Brewer, who went scoreless in 18 minutes while being slowed by tendinitis in his sprained right ankle.

“It was a courageous win for us,” Florida Coach Billy Donovan said. “We lost two starters. We’re in a hard place to play and didn’t know what to expect.”

Clarence Sanders had 16 points for the Rebels (13-7, 3-4), who have lost four in a row since a seven-game winning streak.

No. 17 Georgetown 64, DePaul 44 -- Roy Hibbert had 17 points, and the Hoyas (15-4, 6-2 Big East) used an early 18-0 run at Rosemont, Ill., to hand the Blue Demons (8-11, 1-7) their sixth straight loss.

Creighton 63, No. 25 Northern Iowa 55 -- Nick Porter scored 14 of his career-high 16 points in the second half at Omaha to help the Bluejays (15-5, 9-3 Missouri Valley) spoil the Panthers’ debut in the national rankings. The Panthers fell to 19-4, 9-3.
