Preschool Initiative Doesn’t Go Far Enough

Share

In “Preschool Initiative’s Misguided Approach” (Golden State, Feb. 2), Michael Hiltzik points out that the ballot initiative includes a “particular approach to preschool.”

The approach is very similar to that of the state preschool program that currently provides three-hour classes for California’s 3- to 5-year-olds from low-income families.

Conspicuously absent from all discussions regarding the initiative is the question of what California’s parents need and want. Although some parents may want their young children to attend preschool for only three hours each day, many working parents need a program that includes full-day child care and other family support services.

The Preschool for All initiative, Proposition 82, would create yet another half-day program that fails to meet the growing need among California’s working families for a comprehensive full-day child-care and education program.
