Grade II Field Grade A

Share

A strong case can be made for most of the entrants in the $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap, a Grade II at one mile on the turf that will be run this afternoon at Santa Anita.

The 13 fillies and mares that were entered in the race Friday have combined for 62 victories and $5,058,395 in earnings.

Ticker Tape, a 5-year-old Royal Applause mare, is the lone millionaire in the bunch. Owned by James Peyton’s Forging Oaks Farm and trained by Jim Cassidy, she has won eight of 27 and banked more than $1.4 million.

In her last start, the English-bred ended a nine-race losing streak with a half-length victory over Movie Star in the $81,000 Tuzla Handicap. It was her third win in 10 tries at the Buena Vista distance. Kent Desormeaux, whose new agent is Jim Pegram, will ride Ticker Tape again.

Three Degrees, whose biggest U.S. victory came in the Honeymoon Breeders’ Cup Handicap last June 5 at Hollywood Park, will return to the turf after an experiment with the main track failed miserably in the El Encino last month. The Singspiel filly, who is two for two on the Santa Anita turf course, finished last in the Grade II on Jan. 15.

Race of the day: Silvestris and Oprah Winney, who finished 1-2 in the Ruthless on Jan. 2, will meet again today in the $65,000 Dearly Precious at Aqueduct. Silvestris, who has won two of six for trainer Tom Albertani, will be ridden by Eibar Coa in the six-furlong contest. Pablo Fragoso will be aboard Oprah Winney for trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. Pure Disco, Ring True, Cinnamon Charlie and Vasa are also scheduled to run.

One for the road: Trickey Trevor, who was caught up in an impossible pace in the Sunshine Millions Classic, should get a more realistic scenario and can take his six opponents wire-to-wire over a track he adores in the $150,000 All American Handicap at Golden Gate Fields. Part of a 44 4/5 half mile and 1:08 3/5 six furlongs in the Sunshine Millions Classic, the 7-year-old Demaloot Demashoot horse will be trying for his sixth win in seven starts at Golden Gate.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Macduff and Cosmonaut in the fifth, Scadu, Mr. Thatcher and Cee Dazzel in the sixth and Our Southern Pearl in the seventh.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 2/118. Money: (previous day/meet total): $12.40/$734.20. Total money bet: $702.
