A 50-year-old Los Angeles man trying to cross the Santa Monica Freeway was struck by four cars and killed early Sunday, just a day after being released from Twin Towers jail in downtown Los Angeles.

His name was not released until relatives were notified.

The man ran across the freeway’s westbound lanes near La Cienega Boulevard about 3 a.m. and was hit by a Honda Civic, said Officer Patrick Kimball, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The impact spun him around, Kimball said, after which he jumped over a median wall onto the eastbound lanes.

He was then hit in quick succession by a Chevrolet Suburban, which threw him 50 feet, a Ford Probe and a Ford Crown Victoria.

An identification bracelet on the man’s wrist revealed that he had been released from custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department 24 hours earlier, Kimball said. The incident is under investigation.
