Peter Forsberg isn’t sure what’s more impressive: the way the Philadelphia Flyers are piling up points on the road, or the rate at which Simon Gagne is scoring goals.

Gagne and Forsberg each had a goal and an assist, and the Flyers stretched their road-point streak to 14 games with a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Friday night at Washington

“We find a way to win every single game almost,” Forsberg said. “It’s the sign of a great team. Good teams find a way to win on the road and win close games.”

The Flyers improved to 7-0-1 on their 11-game trip. Their only loss in that stretch was a shootout defeat last Saturday in Washington.

Philadelphia has won three in a row and eight of 10. With points in their next two road games, the Flyers would tie the club record set in 1979-80.

Gagne’s 29th goal broke a 1-1 tie with 27 seconds left in the second period after the Flyers failed on a two-man advantage that lasted 1:13.

With Jamie Heward off for elbowing, Mike Knuble’s deflection trickled behind goalie Olaf Kolzig. Gagne, who was unguarded, had an easy tap-in at the left post.

“It’s fun what’s going on right now,” Gagne said. “The puck keeps going in.”

Atlanta 6, Pittsburgh 4 -- Ilya Kovalchuk recorded his second hat trick of the season for the Thrashers, scoring his third goal into an empty net with 44 seconds left to clinch the victory at Atlanta.

After the Penguins pulled goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Kovalchuk lingered at center ice, took a pass from Marc Savard along the boards, and raced the other way to score his 30th goal into the unguarded net.

Carolina 4, New York Islanders 1 -- Cory Stillman scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period at Raleigh, N.C., for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes, who won the last three games of a four-game homestand. Stillman extended his point streak to 10 games with his 13th goal.

Detroit 3, Nashville 1 -- The loss at Nashville marked the first time this season that the Predators were beaten in regulation by a Central Division team. The Red Wings, meanwhile, improved to 13-1 against teams in their division.

Calgary 1, Toronto 0 -- Tony Amonte scored the only goal and Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves at Calgary for his NHL-leading sixth shutout as the Flames ended the Maple Leafs’ six-game winning streak.

Kiprusoff earned his sixth win in a row and league-best 22nd of the season. He was especially sharp in the third period, making 11 saves, as Toronto generated a number of good scoring opportunities.

In the final seconds. Darcy Tucker had a great opportunity but fanned on Jason Allison’s cross-ice pass from 20 feet out.
