TNT commentator Steve Kerr, who will be working with Marv Albert on tonight’s Laker-Miami Heat game, was talking about last week’s altercation between Seattle’s Ray Allen and Orlando’s Keyon Dooling.

Kerr said that sometimes even teammates get into it. He said he once got into a fight with Chicago Bull teammate Michael Jordan at training camp.

“I hit him in the fist with my eye,” Kerr said.

A good Brand: The NBA selected the Clippers’ Elton Brand and the Washington Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas to appear in an “NBA Cares” public-service announcement that will be shown on TNT today during its Martin Luther King Day doubleheader.

We’ll pass it along: Columbia University economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard lecturer Linda Bilmes recently released a report saying that the United States’ tab for the Iraq war could exceed $2 trillion.

“You know, $2 trillion is a lot,” wrote David Thomas of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Even at his current pace, it would take Kobe Bryant more than 74 billion games to take 2 trillion shots.”

Looking back: On this day in 2000, in the first NFL playoff game in St. Louis, the Rams, on their way to a Super Bowl title, defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 49-37. League most valuable player Kurt Warner passed for 391 yards and five touchdowns.

Trivia answer: Chamberlain made 36 of 63 field-goal attempts in the Philadelphia Warriors’ 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks at Hershey, Pa., on March 2, 1962. Amazingly, Chamberlain, a 51% free-throw shooter, made 28 of 32 foul shots.
