Joe Sakic scored two goals to give him 561 and pass Guy Lafleur for 18th place on the NHL goal scoring list as Colorado ended a two-game losing streak and defeated the Northwest Division-leading Calgary Flames, 7-4, on Tuesday night at Denver.
“It means a lot because as a kid you watched [Lafleur] in Montreal, doing his magic,” Sakic said. “I was fortunate to room with him on the road for the first couple of years I was in Quebec.”
Calgary had won the first four games of a five-game trip.
New Jersey 4, New York Islanders 0 -- Martin Brodeur made 24 saves at Uniondale, N.Y., for his fourth shutout of the season.
Brodeur, seventh on the NHL’s shutout list with 79, improved to 24-15-3 and lowered his goals-against average to 2.59. The Canadian Olympic goalie has had all four of his shutouts this season in the last 11 games.
Buffalo 2, New York Rangers 1 -- Ales Kotalik had a goal and an assist to lead the Sabres at New York.
Ryan Miller made 23 saves for Buffalo.
Boston 3, Atlanta 2 -- P.J. Axelsson scored with 7:02 remaining at Atlanta as the Thrashers lost their third in a row. The Bruins are playing their best hockey of the season, winning for the fourth time in six games, losing the other two in shootouts.
Columbus 6, Vancouver 5 -- Trevor Letowski scored with 4:37 left to lift the Blue Jackets in their highest-scoring home game in five years.
Florida 3, Tampa Bay 2 -- Olli Jokinen scored twice, including the game-winner with 1:45 left in overtime, and Roberto Luongo made 48 saves at Tampa, Fla.
Nashville 2, Detroit 1 -- Paul Kariya’s goal 35 seconds into overtime gave the Predators their second consecutive win in two days over the Red Wings at Detroit. Monday night’s game -- a 3-2 win -- was a makeup game.
Minnesota 3, Phoenix 2 -- Brian Rolston scored two goals at St. Paul, Minn., to give the Wild its first four-game winning streak in a season.
