Backers of a bill expanding federally funded embryonic stem cell research, set for a Senate vote this month, called on President Bush to withdraw his threat to veto it.

“It would be a terrible disservice to the American people, the hopes of millions, that President Bush would veto this,” said Senate Minority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

The House approved the embryonic stem cell bill a year ago. It was expected to pass easily in the Senate.
