New Orleans has dropped out of the race to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention, saying the cost of holding the event after Hurricane Katrina last year was too large.

The announcement leaves Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul and New York City as the remaining competitors to host the party’s nominating convention.

“The main reason is that we’re not at a point to raise the millions and millions required,” said Kelly Schulz, vice president of communications with the city’s convention and visitors bureau.
