CLASSIC MOMENTS IN SURFING: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF LeROY GRANNIS

Share

LEROY GRANNIS grew up in surf culture; born in 1917 in Hermosa Beach, he rode his first waves on an 11-foot redwood board at age 14. In late 1959, he began to photograph his fellow surfers -- and in the process helped to innovate a style of art. With “LeRoy Grannis: Surf Photography of the 1960s and 1970s” (Taschen: 276 pp., $400; edited by Jim Heimann, with an essay by Steve Barilotti), Grannis’ legacy is affirmed. Published in a boxed limited edition, the book has the effect of a time capsule, bringing back an era that continues to resonate for us in shades of Technicolor and black and white.
