David Ortiz rediscovered his clutch hitting in the same spot he left it: where the Red Sox needed it the most.

With Boston down to its last strike, Ortiz hit a three-run homer to lift the Red Sox to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Texas Rangers in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. It was his first game-ending homer of the year.

Mark DeRosa had four hits and two RBIs and Jerry Hairston Jr. drove in two runs in the second game to help Texas salvage a split with a 13-6 win.

In the opener, Texas led, 4-2, with Akinori Otsuka looking for his 12th save in 13 chances. But Trot Nixon and Coco Crisp singled with one out, then Mark Loretta was out on a fly ball to center to set the stage for Ortiz.

Tampa Bay 8, Kansas City 2 -- Jonny Gomes and Carl Crawford each hit two home runs and the Devil Rays tied their club record with six homers at Kansas City, Mo. The Royals turned a triple play with the help of an appeal in the second inning.

With Aubrey Huff on third and Rocco Baldelli on first, Russell Branyan flied out to David DeJesus in shallow center. Huff came home on the play and Baldelli attempted to take second on the throw home, but was thrown out by pitcher Scott Elarton, who was backing up the throw to the plate. Angel Berroa tagged out Baldelli and then threw to Mark Teahen at third as the Royals claimed Huff had left early. Third base umpire Bob Davidson agreed with the appeal and ruled Huff out.

Oakland 6, New York 5 -- Dan Johnson’s second home run ended an eighth-inning tie, Barry Zito won his fifth straight decision and the Athletics got their first sweep at Yankee Stadium in 12 years. Zito (7-3) beat New York for the first time since May 2003 despite walking seven to tie his all-time high.

Cleveland 10, Chicago 8 -- Victor Martinez and Ronnie Belliard hit two-run homers, Travis Hafner and Jason Michaels added solo shots, and the Indians avoided a three-game sweep at Chicago despite the White Sox’s six-run ninth inning.

Jake Westbrook (6-3) gave up two runs in eight innings and improved to 3-0 against the White Sox.

Minnesota 4, Baltimore 0 -- Francisco Liriano (5-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and Justin Morneau homered for the host Twins.
