In a game that featured 16 runs, 26 hits and eight home runs, a spectacular defensive play made the difference.

David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado homered Tuesday night to lead the New York Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-7, at Philadelphia.

But the offensive production was overshadowed by Wright’s diving grab in the ninth inning that helped Billy Wagner earn his first save in Philadelphia since leaving the Phillies as a free agent last off-season.

Wagner got the final five outs for his 13th save in 16 chances. Wright helped the closer with a backhanded catch on a ball hit down the line by Pat Burrell to start a double play. Wagner ended it by striking out Aaron Rowand with a man on.

“That was fantastic, an unbelievable play. It saved the game,” Wagner said.

Tom Glavine failed to get his 10th victory and gave up four homers for only the second time in his career, but the National League East-leading Mets overcame the left-hander’s shortest outing of the season to win their sixth game in a row.

Arizona 2, San Francisco 1 -- Rookie Enrique Gonzalez (2-0) gave up one hit in seven innings and the host Diamondbacks ended a seven-game losing streak. Gonzalez retired 18 in a row at one point.

St. Louis 2, Pittsburgh 1 -- Chris Carpenter (5-3) held the Pirates to three hits and struck out a career-high 13 in seven shutout innings and Scott Rolen had four hits in the Cardinals’ victory at Pittsburgh.

Florida 4, Atlanta 1 -- Josh Johnson (5-4) pitched six strong innings and had a run-scoring double to lead the Marlins to a victory at Miami. John Smoltz (4-5) lost his third consecutive start. The Braves have lost 12 of their last 15 and are 2-10 in June.

Milwaukee 6, Cincinnati 4 -- Geoff Jenkins, who had only six hits in his previous 41 at-bats, had two hits and two runs batted in after being dropped from third to seventh in the Brewers’ batting order to spark Milwaukee to the victory at Cincinnati. The Reds have dropped five in a row after winning eight in a row.

Houston 9, Chicago 2 -- Chris Burke had four hits and scored five times to match Craig Biggio’s team record in the Astros’ victory at Chicago. Andy Pettitte (6-7) earned his first career victory over the Cubs and at one point retired 12 in a row.
