A private passenger plane attempting to land at a small airport in Upland crashed in a nearby field at 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, seriously injuring the three occupants and sparking a 3-acre blaze, according to fire and aviation officials.

The man and two women, all members of the same family, were hospitalized with burns, according to Suzanne Cable, division chief of the Upland Fire Department. One was airlifted from the crash site, near Cable Airport, to the burn unit at UCLA Medical Center.

The twin-engine Cessna Citation had taken off earlier Saturday evening from Montgomery Field in San Diego, said Jerry Johnston, regional operations officer for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were at the scene most of Sunday to determine the cause of the crash, Johnston said.
