A man was killed and at least four others were injured Wednesday when a car collided with a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus on Rosemead Boulevard in Pico Rivera, officials said.

The unidentified dead man was in his 20s, California Highway Patrol officials said, and was in the car, but it was unclear if he was the driver.

Two passengers in the car were seriously injured and transported to a hospital, said Bill Heard, an MTA spokesman.

Two of only three passengers on the Line 265 bus were injured and taken to a hospital, Heard said.

The accident occurred about 5:40 p.m. at Rosemead Boulevard and Gallatin Road, according to the CHP.

The bus driver, whom Heard identified as Eric Davis, was traveling south on Rosemead Boulevard when a car in a northbound lane veered across the road and crashed into the front of the bus’ left side.

The bus went about 200 feet down an embankment lined with large boulders, Heard said.

“The fact that he was able to keep that bus upright is a tribute to his skill,” Heard said of the driver.

The identities of passengers in the bus and car remained unknown as of Wednesday night, as did the cause of the accident. The crash closed Rosemead Boulevard for at least four hours.
